MOBILE ALL IN ONE WORKSTATION FOR THE SCAN N CUT

Creating A Mobile All-In-One Workstation for the Brother Scan N Cut (for under £65)

For a while now I have had an idea in my head of wanting to create a custom workstation for my Scan N Cut because I have very limited space in my open plan living arrangement – and recently decided to get more efficient with the space that I do have available – but have found the ready made metal trolleys to be a little unstable. So, I set my brain to thinking about a mobile, all-in-one unit to house my Scan N Cut, accessories and mats – and I have finally managed to create one!

It took a little planning but I am so happy with the result that I wanted to share it with you too.

First, here is the result (without stuff in it)…

A mobile, all-in-one unit to house my Scan N Cut and accessories!

It’s not the prettiest, but it sure is practical – it has storage (that you can customise for your needs), wheels to move it about and a flat and stable surface area to place the Scan N Cut machine on – what could be better?

Ok, if you want pretty, how about cutting some vinyl decals with your Scan N Cut and truly personalising it?!

What I Used To Make The Mobile All-In-One Brother Scan N Cut Workstation

Ok, let’s break this down. First, everything other than the hook was from IKEA (although you can get hooks from IKEA too). I will list the prices too so you can see how much this might cost but of course, this might vary from country to country.

  • KALLAX shelving unit, white, 77×77 cm – £29
  • ALEX castors, black, 50 mm – £5 for 4.
    • These do not have brake locks but you can get some that do, they are just cost a little more.
  • TJENA storage box with lid, white, 32x35x32 cm – £5 each
    • I got two of these to hold various bits and pieces. I might switch them out for more permanent inserts later.
  • KALLAX Insert with 1 shelf, white, 33×33 cm – £9 each.
    • Got this to give me more shelving within the unit.
  • Self adhesive hook (not shown) – pennies – great for SDX mats that have the diamond cut out at the top of the mat. I will likely only be keeping one at a time on this hook to prevent dust getting onto the mat. Also great for those hanging magazine racks that can hold instructions, card, paper and more.

The basic quad frame with castors came in at £34; with the boxes, shelving inserts, this came in at a total cost of £62. Not bad for an all-in-one mobile workstation don’t you think?

I was going to include links above but then I remembered that we are from all over the world and the stock codes and websites are slightly different so I’ve just included the names and some pics of the finished project for a little inspiration and to help you identify what to look for if you are planning a trip to IKEA.

There is one thing that I did not include in the list that I would highly recommend adding to this solution and that is some mat supports for the front and rear of the machine. I got mine a while back from Walker Crafty Arts. You can see my thoughts on these in this post.

They also have a tool caddy which sits on top of the machine (or elsewhere if you would prefer) if that would be something help you get organised and make things more accessible.

Do The Mats Fit?

Sadly not. You can however add a hook to the side of the unit to hang them on if you have the ones with the hanging hole cut out. I’ve included it in the list above but not shown it in the pics or videos.

While we are on the subject of things that won’t fit. The pink box that comes with the rhinestone kit doesn’t. I decanted the main kit nots into a cellophane bag that held one of the mats during shipping and that fits in the box nicely. I can just use a tray with the rhinestone kit if I need to.

Also, the vinyl roller attachment is too long to sit within the unit but, if the unit is not sitting against a wall, this won’t be an issue.

Do It Your Way!

This is of course what I used to create the version you see in this post, but because of the versatility of the KALLAX system from IKEA, you can adapt this to your own needs/budget as there are various other wheel types (with locking breaks or static feet instead if you don’t need to move the unit), unit inserts (cupboards, drawers, boxes etc) and third party accessories including paper storage shelves.

Is it time to make 2025 the year of being organised and space-efficient?! Probably not, but this is a start in the right direction, lol!

Anyhoo, enough waffle. If you’d like to see how I put this All-In-One Scan N Cut Workstation together, please do check out the video below that is now on my Scan N Cut Tutorials YouTube channel.
