Thank you John for all your time and very helpful info you have put into helping us crafters of BSC. :-) I’m still trying to get the cuts right for Crafter’s Companion Centura Pearl. Can you help please? Glad you found my info of using freezer paper to adhere to fabric useful. I print off designs and use them to create new patterns and fabrics a to use in my sewing projects. (Belinda)
Hi John , thank you for your kind reply. I think I need new glasses as I can only find Create and Craft Pearlescent card which is a lighter card stock than Centura Pearl. Do I use these settings for Crafters companion Centura Pearl? The only thing I can find from Crafters Companion, on the list, is Heat Resistant Acetate
Go by the weight. If it’s 250gsm go for settings near to or lower than that and try a test cut. If it doesn’t go through first time, increase blade by half a notch. Pressure will be somewhere between 0 and 2 (go low first!)
Ok. Thank you so much for your valuable time n answering my query. I have probably had settings too low – fearful of cutting my mat! I am using the Brother to make embellishments for a collage I’m making in memory of my daughter, Thank you again. You are such a kind and clever gent!
Of course I will John. I would be honoured to share it with you. At The moment it is in planning stage.I have cut the embellishments and printed the papers and am designing the layout.I’m saving for some gesso, texture paste and spray mists. I can send a pic of the project in its current state, (it looks a bit like a mood board at th mo!) or would you prefer to see it when it’s finished?
Happy crafting, Belinda
Just click on the link and it should open on your PC. Then choose print from the file menu or from the tool bar (that may be hidden so you might need to move your cursor down there to make it visible).
hi john just another question where do I get freezer paper from or is it just like wax or greaseproof paper as I have never been into crafting with fabric until I started to watch your demos
I have some on order from Amazon but have also suggested to the buying team at work that we get some in. Can’t guarantee it will happen but have suggested
Not at all the same as greaseproof paper. One side is matt paper, the other side is shiny which can be ironed to fabric for a ‘lightweight’ temporary hold, then easy to tear off after stitching, etc.. Lots of info on the Reynolds Freezer-Wrap website. Some SnCut users on the Yahoo Group are actually using a stick-and-spray along with it for extra stability. I used it for years in Canada for meat-wrapping for freezer and also for sewing applications. Another product which gives lightweight temporary hold like Freezer Paper is the Iron-on Tear-off Stabilizer. Often used for stabilizing fabric for embroidery in a hoop. It also comes in wash-away. The tear-away comes in a couple of brand names, e.g. Sulky as well as no-name brands.
Thanks John for taking the time to do the lists for us, I enjoy watching all your shows even though I cant use my scan n cut machine as I cant get any replacement standard blades.
I was cutting last night and have cut 3 black circles on the mat. The fibres have made a mess of my lovely mat, I have tried using the spatula to get it off but it hasn’t worked, how can I remove the fibres
I have had my scan n cut for almost 2 weeks and was scared to get it out of the box. I did last night.Within 10 minutes I was cutting circles for my daughters Alien outfit which she will wear to nursery on Thursday. I cut 3 black circles and they have left a big mess on my mat (which now has lots of cut lines on it) how can I get it off? I have tried using the spatula but the fibres seem pretty stuck. Love the machine and the blog is great. I have (since finding create and craft) added to my sewing hobby and have the ultimate pro, big shot and now the scan and cut so I am watching with glee now I have opened up paper crafting! Keep up the good work
Hi, Don’t know if this will help, but to avoid lots of cut marks on yourr mat, always test cut first. Use the lowest pressure possible and increase blade depth first before the pressure. ( the pressure is how much the blade is pushed into the material used). Hope this helps. Someone on this blog said that marks can be removed by spraying the mat lightly with water then wiping over with a damp cloth). :-)
Hi
I also have cut lines into my mat. Being naturally cautious I am, following my own trials commencing with the lowest and gradually increasing pressure(s) to get a cut, but it also cuts into the mat on my machine. I can’t seem to get one without the other. I thought it was my mistake at first, but now I am assuming that this is normal and the mat will survive these marks. Up until now I’ve only been cutting paper and card with the standard mat and taking very good care of it off machine. So there are no dark marks and it scans ok. Early days, so I expect that additional info will appear once more people have been using the machine. Thanks John & Mel for the info so far, much appreciated as there is a lot to learn.
I received my machine 7 Feb. I too had the same happen with fabric and heat and bond backing stuck on my mat and thought it unusable. I scraped the mat as clean as I could with the spatula until it was nearly bald and as I had destroyed the fabric support sheet with cuts and stuck fabric dabbed the mat with the remaining sticky parts which removed more of the mess. I also cut half a lovely flower through my mat and was set to return the machine feeling I would never master it. However, I used duck tape on the back of the mat to hold the cut portion in place as suggested in a Youtube video on ScanNCut. Dabbing the surface of the mat with duck tape also lifted the fabric residue off the mat. I have since been very successfully continuing to use my mat for fabric cutting (which is what I purchased the machine for) by starching and spraying with repositionable adhesive. I have ordered a 12″x24″ for the quilting patterns and will use the original mat for test cutting. Hope this helps anyone else in the same boat and will continue to watch the blog for any hints and tips, particularly on fabric cutting.
I happily received my Scan n Cut from Create and Craft a couple of weeks ago haven’t really had time to play yet, my holiday got in the way and know jet lag has taken over, I did manage to cut 1 shape and was very impressed with its clean cut, will post again when I feel human….
John, Thank you – what more can I say? I really do appreciate all the work you put in – in fact where would we be without you? I think you must be the most loved Crafter in C&C!
Thank you John for the hard work & time in compiling this ScanNcut Materials Cutting list it is very much appreciated. I’m still experimenting with my machine it is trial and error for me at the moment, but with people like you and Mel to help us along it makes it an easier journey. Just off to watch the next show coming up on C&C this morning.
Thanks John for all your efforts and information passed don’t know how you manage to work and then do things like this, your are a star.
