    Hi John
I am having trouble scanning the square trellis pattern you so kindly put on your blog. It keeps telling me it can’t scan it because there are too many patterns. The star shaped trellis have scanned ok. Hope you can help. Please keep up your good work.
    Many thanks

I don’t quite understand why you are scanning it as it’s an FCM file that will cut directly from the machine like any other ‘pattern’.
What is it that you are trying to do?

Hi John I am trying to update my scan n cut machine but every time i click on the link my computer does open it. Can you advise me how to do this.

There are download instructions at the point of download. These are comprehensive and step by step.
Are you using a left click instead of right click?
Just remember, you are not updating your PC only your machine so there is no reason to open the file on your PC, just to download to a USB.

Hi John I can not do an update on my machine. when i click on the update on my computer it wont open can you advise me what i need to do

You don’t open it on your PC, you need to follow the instructions that are on the download page.

The process usually involves saving directly to a USB and then taking that to your machine.

Try reading over the instructions on the download page once more.

    Hi John,
I wonder if you could answer a question for me ? On some of the videos on the create and craft website a fabric mat is mentioned a few times . It seams to be purple background , does this come with the machine or can you buy it separately ? Your demo’s have been great on C and C , very informative thank you . I taped 8 shows over the past week, and they had loads of info but none of them showed a demo of the fabric side . As I am a sewer I would have liked this to be featured. Is there any chance this will be in the future? Can you only use the blue stabiliser 12×12 to cut once or can it be used again ? Sorry for all the questions . Thanks for your help

I am not sure what you are refering to in relation to the fabric mat. I do however believe that the mats used in America were labeled “paper” and “fabric” wheras in the UK they are labeled “low tack” and “Standard” – could this be where you are getting confused?

I have demonstrated fabric a fair bit on the channel and plan to write a blog post in the near future with some tips and advice.

The blue stabilizer can be used several times however the blade will inevitably cut into that overlay, so the more you use it, the smaller the pieces are that you will need to remove in the future. Replacements are out there for when you need them.

Thanks John for getting back to me . Yes I think that is where I got confused with different countries calling things different names. My machine arrived today , so busy putting things to the test . Disaster struck when using brother’s recommendations for cutting fabric for appliqué I used the settings suggested and cut through the mat ! Then I looked to see what your and mels suggestions were and they are the same . Lucky I just did a test square that was tiny !! Could you tell me though when I reduced the blade depth to 3 it cut just fine but left a mark on the standard mat kind of like an outline so when I cut out “Sophie” I can tell that’s what I cut out after removing all fabric etc . Do I adjust the blade or the pressure again ? Is that supposed to happen ?.

I must have missed the one you demo’d on fabric ! Sod’s law !!

Gonna go and give the blue stabiliser a go now . Thank you for sharing all your knowledge on what looks to be a great machine . Think I may have to get rid of all the others now that take up far to much space !!
        Thanks again
        Mandy

Leaving slight score marks on the mat is normal Mandy. Hope you are still enjoying it :)

Hi John, just to say thank you for all the wonderful tips that yo have given us on C&C. I placed my order on Saturday and am now waiting impatiently for my new machine to arrive, “what is taking so long”. Anyway, my question is. I have a Craft Robo, whcih I have had for about 4 years now, so as you can imagine I have bought quite a few designs for the Sillhouette website. Can you tell me if I can use these designs on my Scan N Cut, I think I may have to draw them out first and then copy them to USB, do you think this is possible? Once again, many thanks, Lesley Timmins.

What format are they in? GSD, SVG or STUDIO?

Hi Lesley, Not sure if my answer will be of much help to you, but anyway here goes. I have the Silhouette Cameo which I’ve had about 2 yrs now and like you have many designs for that machine, I was disappointed that I couldn’t convert files created in Silhouette Studio (STUDIO format) to work on my Scan N Cut, HOWEVER what I did do as a work around is go into the Silhouette Studio program, go up to the top toolbar, select the LINE STYLE icon, choose the middle icon, then look over to the right hand side of the main screen, go down to the bottom and tick the box ” print lines of selected shapes” you can also set the line thickness if you want a heavier line, print out your design on copy paper, then scan that into the Scan N cut and you should be able to cut out your chosen design. JUST BE AWARE OF COPYRIGHT ISSUES, I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT STORE THESE IMAGES ON YOUR BROTHER MACHINE.

I hope this is of some help to you.

Thank you Jaclyn, I will certainly try this, it sounds as if it will be much quicker than drawing out the designs. I am aware of copy right but only uSe these designs for personal use, so should be OK. Thanks again.

    Dear John,

Many thanks to both you and Mel for all the hard work that you have put into showing us the Brother Scan N cut.  I have loved playing with the machine, however, on receiving the latest CandC magazine I have tried to follow Mel’s instructions for the patchwork card and find that I cannot turn my seam allowance off when I go into the patchwork patterns.  I am sorry to bother you but I do not have Mel’s email address.  Can you ehlp in any way please, or can you give me Kel’s email address and I will contact her.

    Thanking you in advance.

    regards

Hi my friend and I tried the instructions from the c&c mag and found it worked well the key that turned the seam allowance off is when you click on the part of the patchwork you want then click ok then the next screen is where it is. Hope that is clear enough.

Hi John. Thank you for all your work and the useful information you are sharing with us.
Just thought I’d share my latest use for the Scan N Cut. I used it to cut out baking parchment circles to line my tiny 2″ flan tins to stop the flans sticking! Previously I’ve had to fiddle about with cutting out 6 disks at a time by hand {like the shop bought larger cake tin liners} to stop cake mix sticking to the pan, but now I can have custom shapes for all my cake pans without the cost of buying pre~cut circles, and from now on I will only have to store one roll of parchment instead of packs of 100 circles in different sizes!
I set the cutting and pressure to the lowest settings, taking the pressure down to minus 1 and it worked well.

John, I wonder if I can ask for some advice re the deep cut blade. I have cut some doeflex templates (C&C) with the blade at 4.5. I watched closely as the machine was cutting and noticed the blade setting change all of its own accord. It gradually moved down to 4 while cutting! I checked it a few times and I am certain it was set correctly initially. This meant that the cutting wasn’t as clean at the finish as at the start. Thank you in advance, Dee.

Hi Dee. Not experienced this one myself. Have you spoken to Brother?

Yes, I had emailed Brother already. Sadly, along with others, I have found their response time to be weeks rather than days – and even then only after chasing. I have read elsewhere that someone had the same problem – just wish I could remember!
Hopefully, I will hear from Brother before too long.

        Hello John,
Although I have heard from Brother – I still don’t have an answer to my question. So, I am asking you in desperation! I have tried cutting Doeflex and Chipboard with the deep cut blade using your recommendations and trying a few settings of my own – the setting on the blade moves upward or downward of its own accord. I am wondering if I am doing something wrong – but can’t think what it could be. Does anyone else reading this have any suggestions? I have asked if it may be a faulty blade holder and I am waiting for an answer. Thank you in advance, Dee

I genuinely don’t know Dee. My only temporary workaround would be to stick masking tape to the blade holder in order to keep it in place while cutting. I genuinely haven’t experienced this. I will try and contact Brother when I am next in at work.
