Hallo you. Been a while since I last did a Worldwide Wednesday blog post so I wanted to try and explore more talent from around the world this year and the first person that I would like to introduce you to is a very talented artist from Cornwall in England.

Her name is Alice Hole, so, if you have your mug/brew ready, let me introduce you to Alice.

Here she is, working away in her awesome looking studio.

That looks like such a calm and relaxing place to work, doesn’t it?

Anyway, enough of me, let me hand you over to Alice and the answers she gave during her interview.

Introductions – Please can you provide a brief introduction to yourself, where in the world you are and let everyone know what you currently do in the arts/crafts industry.

Hi! I’m Alice Hole, an artist living in beautiful Cornwall in the south-west UK. I love to paint and draw artwork inspired by the stunning surroundings here in Cornwall.

When did you begin working in the creative industry and what was the seminal or defining moment that put you on that path?

I studied art at university and started selling paintings and drawings from a friend’s shop. I took a career break when I had a family.

About 5 years ago we moved to Cornwall and as the children were older I plunged back into being an artist again!

Is what you do now what you imagined you would be doing when you first started out?

When I first went to university, I studied 3-dimensional art and specialised in metals and textiles. I expected to either become a jeweller or a textile artist. Although I loved this media, drawing and painting were where my heart really lay so I went back to that.

Thinking back through the years, what memorable responses have you had to your work and did this change you in any way?

I have been fortunate enough to win a couple of awards with my art. Although not vital to me carrying on as an artist, these were massively encouraging.

It’s all too easy as an artist to become very isolated and not know whether anyone likes what you’re doing or not, so to win an award and to hear positive comments about your work is so helpful.

What has been most important to you as an artist or crafter – a goal, a mentor, support, knowledge, advice, information, funding, family, friends … etc?

Without a doubt, the support of my family. Whenever I’ve had self-doubt, they’re always there supporting me all the way.

How have you changed during your career and do you see room for more changes in the coming years?

I see my style slowly changing all the time. Although I love the detail, I can see that I’m becoming more ‘painterly’ in my approach and my artwork is becoming more about light and atmosphere.

I’m not sure how it’ll change in the future, but I’m looking forward to finding out!

What work do you most enjoying doing?

I think my first love will always be drawing. There’s something so wonderful about being just you, a piece of paper and a pencil.

Who/What inspires you the most?

I love landscape artists past and present such as Constable & Hockney. I see many contemporary artists on social media and it’s great to see what everyone is up to.

How would you describe a creative life? Fun, challenging, rewarding … etc?

Both challenging and rewarding. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of selling a piece of artwork to someone or having a piece commissioned by a client.

What would be your dream project?

To do a series of artworks based on the town and surrounding area where I live, which is kind of what I’m doing right now!

What wouldn’t you do without?

Pencils

What are you working on at the moment?

A painting of beautiful Porthleven which is an ancient fishing harbour on the south coast of Cornwall.

What future project(s) are you most looking forward to?

I’m having an exhibition in Porthleven with fellow artist Sophie Penstone 24th-30th March 2018 which is very exciting. I shall also be exhibiting in St Ives in June with The National Acrylic Painters’ Association

What are you doing when you’re not creating?

I love walking, crochet, reading and spending time with my family.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

I listen to talking books whilst I paint and go through many, many books in the ear.

Do you have any tips or inspiring words for others?

Keep going, even when your inner voice is negative. Push through and you’ll get to the other side. Many times, I’ve nearly given up on a piece that I’ve really struggled with and nine times out of ten, these pieces turn out to be something really special.
