Brother Scan N Cut Quick Tip – Blade Holder Check

Well it seems like you liked the last quick tip so I’ve got another one for you.

This time it relates to the blade holder.

Here are five blade holders collected up during a recent workshop.

Hopefully you also notice how none of the blade adjustment number settings are in the same place.

Heres a closer look.

This will affect the results you get if you are following a settings guide.

Why?

Because when the blade carriage is put to its highest setting, which is 12, the mark above the twelve should line up with the mark just below the Brother logo.

You can clearly see on the middle one above that it is WAY off.

The simple fix?

Turn the blade holder until there is no gap between the top and bottom half and the carefully peel off the sticker with all of the numbers on, reposition it so that the mark above the 12 lines up with the line below the Brother logo and then stick it back down.

This could help alleviate some issues you may have found with blade depth settings however I would always still recommend doing a test cut to make sure that things are as they should be before committing time effort and resources to a complex twenty minute long cut.

Hope this helps!

J :)

  1. Hi, sorry to bother you with this query.
(My English is not very good, I’m Argentine)
The problem I have is with a scanncut 650.When I make cuts in papers of 120 g / m2, around the cut is a mark (drag) of the blade holder.
The end of it is clean and without marks.
I did tests with different depths and cut pressures, but the effect is the same. I would appreciate if you can help us.
    Thank you

  2. My blade is scrapping the already cut letters and pulling them up while in motion. Ive cleaned my blade and it is still continuing to happen. Any suggestion?

  3. Hello! I’ve just accidentally dropped my standard blade holder and the grip has come off – is there any way I can fix it? I can’t seem to be able to make it stay in its place… grrr

  4. Thank you so much for a great resource for us newbies. I have a SNC 900 which was a gift for Christmas and it worked fantastically for first week. I use SU cardstock and it worked great with a depth of 6 and no pressure. Suddenly it needed a depth of 8 and pressure of 3 to cut and sometimes it cuts incompletely. Do u think it’s the blade or maybe the blade housing? I did drop the housing but can’t remember if that was around that time. There seems to be a magnet in the housing and I thought maybe I have damaged that. Thanks again

  5. Thank you! I was wondering why my mat was being cut when the blade was set at 1 . . . discovered my blade was as bad as the center one in your picture. What a difference this has made. Once again, thank you!

  6. Hi J

I didn’t realise the blade holders were so out of sync, until I just took the one out of my machine, it was out by a good eighth of an inch and my deep cut blade holder was out by half an inch. Thank you so very much for this very useful information. Will definately be saving you as a friend.

    Many thanks

  8. I’m having issues with my machine, even using it on a 1, and a minus 5 pressure was too deep of a cut, going through sticky back vinyl, backing paper and mat! I am in contact with Brother who want pictures of everything, when I came across this article… when mine is screwed up to it’s highest point the Brother logo line, lines up before the 11 marker! I have sent Brother a picture of this also. Will see what they say, but if they are useless I will be using your advice to see if it helps
