Single Line Font - Pen Test 3

Single Line Machine Writable Alphabet (for writing with your machines!) – SVG, DXF and FCM Formats

I was asked a while ago about creating a single line machine writable alphabet for use with electronic cutting and plotting machines.

Well, it took a bit of wrangling but I have finally succeeded and am pleased to say that it is now ready to download.

What Am I On About?

Some of you may be wondering what a single line machine writable alphabet is and why you would want one.

Well, with traditional fonts you will always have an outline which is great if you are cutting your lettering out on your electronic cutting machines however if you wish to use a pen attachment and draw the letters/words/phrases you will always see them as an outline. Like this …

This is because fonts are a vector based graphical display item. Sounds complicated, it’s basically an image that is plotted by points and therefore it needs a closed loop in which to display itself, much like an SVG image.

So, bla bla bla, why the single line thing?

Well, with this alphabet (available in SVG, DXF and FCM formats) you can now draw the letters/words/phrases and make it look like they were drawn using a biro (or whatever other pen you wish to use). Like this …

It’s important to note however that this is not a traditional font. I’ll explain more in a bit.

Tell Me More…

So, that’s the why. Now the what.

What is included in this set?

There are two styles of alphabet. A simple block printing style and a script style.

A full A-Z are available in both uppercase and lowercase. All numbers (0-9) are also included.

I have also included the punctuation marks as follows ! ? @ # ~ &

What machines are they compatible with?

The file formats included in this set are SVG, DXF and FCM.

Here is a quick guide to the file types included within this set.

  • SVG – Scalable Vector Graphics. This is an image file type that can also be used by most home hobby cutting machines. Some machines will require the file to be converted in external software before it can be used for cutting.
  • DXF – A vector based file type that can be used be most home hobby cutting machines. In particular this file type can be used with the SILHOUETTE range of cutting machines in their free software. It can also be used in the majority of CAD software if you are super clever.
  • FCM – A  file type specifically compatible with the Brother Scan N Cut.

What do they look like?

Updated 2019 Please note, these images were created with a previous non-installed version of this character set.

  3. Sounds brilliant, John, you are so talented! Just a pity that I’m no good at technology and although I can understand what you’ve written, I wouldn’t be able to do it. Maybe when you’re in Cleveland I could book a one to one with you on technology!?? xx

    • John,
Thank you so much for taking the time to work out this issue. It was so frustrating that Scan n Cut supplies a universal pen holder, but doesn’t offer an option to write using a single line font. This will give users an array of opportunities to customize projects.
